'Business And Human Rights' From Amnesty International Researcher | Considering The Environmental Impact Of The US Petrochemical Industry And Its Implications For Japan
Amnesty International Japan is hosting an online seminar focusing on critical issues surrounding business and human rights. We will present a report published in January this year, "The Cost of Doing Business? The Petrochemical Industry’s Toxic Pollution in the USA," delving into the human rights, environmental and climate harms linked to the petrochemical industry and its implications for Japan.
The report reveals human rights are being sacrificed along the Houston Ship Channel in Texas by devastating pollution from over 600 petrochemical plants in the area, including plants owned by European and Japanese companies. These plants process fossil fuels into chemicals to make things like plastics, fertilisers and pesticides for use in the USA and around the world. Local residents are regularly exposed to toxic substances linked to a wide range of illnesses, such as cancers, respiratory diseases, heart disease and birth defects. Yet the polluters are rarely held to account.
Although the petrochemicals industry relies on fossil fuels and is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, it is growing rapidly worldwide as fossil fuel companies look to offset losses from the green energy transition with plastics production.
The webinar aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between business operations, human rights, and climate change. While it is primarily aimed at professionals in the ESG, CSR, and sustainability sectors, participants from diverse backgrounds are welcome. We would particularly welcome English-speaking youth to actively participate and contribute to the dialogue; however, we will be providing Japanese interpretations for those Japanese speakers.
アムネスティ・インターナショナル日本は、ビジネスと人権をめぐるオンラインセミナーを開催します。今年1月に発表された報告書、「ビジネスの代償？米国における石油化学産業の有害な汚染」を紹介し、石油化学産業に関連する人権、環境、気候への害と日本への影響について掘り下げます。
この報告書は、テキサス州のヒューストン船舶海峡沿いで、ヨーロッパや日本の企業が所有する工場を含む600以上の石油化学工場による破滅的な汚染によって、人権が蔑ろにされていることを明らかにしました。これらの工場は、化石燃料を化学薬品に加工し、プラスチック、肥料、殺虫剤などを製造し、それはアメリカ国内だけでなく世界中で使用されています。地元の住民は、がん、呼吸器疾患、心臓病、先天性欠損症など、様々な病気につながる有害物質に日常的にさらされています。しかし、汚染者が責任を問われる事はほとんどありません。
石油化学産業は化石燃料に依存しており、世界的な温室効果ガス排出の大きな要因となっていますが、化石燃料会社がグリーンエネルギー転換による損失をプラスチック生産で相殺しようとしているため、世界的に急成長している現状があります。
このウェビナーは、事業活動、人権、気候変動が相互に及ぼす影響について包括的に理解を促すことを目的としています。ESG、CSR、サステナビリティ分野に携わられている実務家の皆さまを主な対象としていますが、さまざまなバックグラウンドからの参加を歓迎します。特に若者の積極的な参加を期待しています！

Alysha Khambay is a researcher on business and human rights at Amnesty International and author of the report, "The Cost of Doing Business? The Petrochemical Industry’s Toxic Pollution in the USA". She has 12 years’ experience investigating and documenting human rights violations, with several years focussed on conducting research on corporate abuse, including labour exploitation and environmental harm, in global supply chains.
アムネスティ・インターナショナルのビジネスと人権に関する調査員。報告書「ビジネスの代償？米国における石油化学産業の有害な汚染」の著者。12年にわたる人権侵害の調査・文書化の経験を持ち、中でもグローバル・サプライチェーンにおける労働搾取や環境破壊など、企業の虐待に関する調査に注力している。
